To be auctioned on its Impressionist and modern art evening sale at the New York location on May 12, is a Claude Monet water lilies painting entitled, Le Bassin aux Nymphéas, which will certainly be the highlight of the sale.
The large-scale piece was completed during the last decade of his life, between 1917 and 1919. Having a garden with a lily pond by his home in Giverny, the impressionist painter was inspired and produced a string of paintings that mimicked his famous subject, called Grandes Decorations.
The work is estimated to go for $40 million and if sold as such, the artwork will be part of his top 10 works to be sold at auction. Many of Monet’s water lilies paintings are usually the top sellers at numerous auctions, as one work sold for £40.9 million ($80.5 million) at Christie’s in 2008, and another from the David Rockefeller collection sold for $84 million at Christie’s in 2018.
