Italian-Thai cartoonist Elisa Macellari has created a graphic novel of Yayoi Kusama’s life, titled KUSAMA: A Graphic Biography. In times of lockdown and inability to appreciate the Japanese artist’s prolific work due to several of her exhibitions having been postponed, the graphic novel offers a look into the life of one of the best-known artists of our time.
The 128-page novel documents the vivid biography of Kusama, her rise to fame, across her departure from Japan as a young artist, her transition to the buzzing New York art scene in the 1960s, to her eventual return home. The 400 illustrations included farther highlight some of her most iconic works, including her polka-dotted sewn and stuffed shapes and nature-inspired paintings.
