Pablo Larraín is working on a new film, and it’s a Princess Diana biopic. The image shared from the set offers a first look at Kristen Stewart in the lead role as the film begins production.
Spencer revolves around a single weekend at the royal family’s Sandringham estate, as she arrives on the decision to end her marriage to Prince Charles. “December, 1991: The Prince and Princess of Wales’ marriage has long since grown cold,” reads the official synopsis from Neon. “Though rumours of affairs and a divorce abound, peace is ordained for the Christmas festivities at Sandringham Estate. There’s eating and drinking, shooting and hunting. Diana knows the game. This year, things will be a whole lot different.”
The shared image features Kristen as Lady Di gazing thoughtfully out of a window. It also gives an idea of what to expect from Little Women costume designer Jacqueline Durran, with the young royal pictured in a black hat and veil, with a black bow at her neck.
Pablo Larraín is probably best known for his psychological dance drama Ema, but the director has previously worked on unconventional biopics on Jackie Kennedy and Pablo Neruda, making Spencer pretty familiar ground. Claire Mathon, the cinematographer behind sublime scenes in Atlantics and Portrait of a Lady on Fire, is onboard as director of photography, while the script comes courtesy of screenwriter Steven Knight.
The film is slated to arrive in autumn 2021
