“Akira,” the groundbreaking film that helped to introduce anime to American audiences, is set to hit U.S. IMAX screens for the first time ever. This 4K remastered version of the animated movie was recently released in Japan on Apr. 24, along with the announcement of a new anime series adaptation being in the works.
The remastered version of the 1988 film will be shown on IMAX screen across the U.K. and Ireland, with more than 200 locations due to show Akira for a very limited three-day run from October 7 until October 9.
Since its premiere back in 1988, it has been established as one of the greatest animes of all time, trailblazing efforts in animation and showing the world that cartoons weren’t reserved just for kids.
Akira is an incredibly influential anime feature film from 1988 which had a worldwide impact. The movie upended what people’s perceptions were of anime (and animation in general) at the time.
“Akira” is scheduled to run at select IMAX theaters starting Sept. 24.
