The Matrix 4 is one of many upcoming movies that’s had its release moved around–it was originally set to hit theaters next June, was moved back to April 2022, before shifting forward again to December 2021 December 2021. Nevertheless, production has now resumed on the film, and co-star Jessica Henwick (Iron Fist) has spoken about what fans can expect from the much-anticipated sci-fi sequel.

In an interview with ComicBook, Henwick explained that director Lana Wachowski is using pioneering technology in much the same way she did in 1999, when she helmed the first Matrix with sister Lilly.

“There are definitely moments on set where Yahya [Abdul-Mateen II] and I look at each other and we just go, ‘Matrix 4,'” Henwick said. “Those pinch me moments. Lana is doing some really interesting things on a technical level in the same way that you know, she created a style back then. I think she’s going to change the industry again with this film. There’s some camera rigs that I’ve never seen before that we’re using. That’s probably all I can say for that.”

Very little has been revealed about the story for The Matrix 4, and the details of either Henwick and Abdul-Mateen II’s new characters are currently unknown. They will join main stars Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Ann Moss, who will reprise their roles as Neo and Trinity from the other Matrix movies. Additionally, Jada Pinkett Smith, who will play Niobe from the second and third films.

There are two main actors from the earlier films who won’t be returning however–Laurence Fishburne as Morpheus and Hugo Weaving and Agent Smith. In January, Weaving revealed that he had originally been offered a part in the movie, but scheduling conflicts meant he couldn’t do it. Fishburne has also confirmed he won’t be back, stating that he had “not been invited” to play Morpheus again.
