The trailer for an upcoming queer Christmas rom-com starring Kristen Stewart is out. Happiest Season follows a young couple who navigate the early stages of a relationship complicated by the fact that Harper is yet to come out to her parents. Harper, one of the girls, is played by Mackenzie Davis while her girlfriend, Abby, is played by Kristen.
The synopsis reads: “Meeting your girlfriend’s family for the first time can be tough, planning to propose at her family’s annual Christmas dinner – until you realize that they don’t even know she’s gay – is even harder,” adding that Happiest Season is “a holiday romantic comedy that hilariously captures the range of emotions tied to wanting your family’s acceptance, being true to yourself, and trying not to ruin Christmas.”
Clea DuVall, who is the movie’s director, and who starred in 90s classics But I’m a Cheerleader and Girl, Interrupted (among others), is now back with her second full-length offering, following her debut as a director with the 2016 comedy The Intervention.
“I’ve spent Christmases with partners whose parents didn’t know”, DuVall said to Entertainment Weekly in a recent interview. “I’ve been ‘the friend’ at a family function. On a journey like coming out, you have no idea what’s going to happen or how people will react, and it’s scary, there’s a part of your life that changes once you do.”
