“The Spirit of the Rose,” the largest purple-pink diamond ever auctioned has recently sold for a whopping $26.6 million. The incredibly rare 14.8 carats Russian diamond found its new owner in Geneva, as part of Sotheby’s auction. Most of the pink diamonds, 99% of them, come under 10 carats.
The oval-shaped stone was cut from “Nijinsky,” a 27.85-carat rough diamond discovered back in 2017 from the Ebelyakh mine in northeast Russia — named after the Russian-Polish ballet dancer Vaslav Nijinsky. Despite its shape and size that commanded such a high price, it is not the world’s most expensive diamond ever sold. That place holds CTF Pink Star, which sold a 59-carat diamond for $71 million USD at Sotheby’s in Hong Kong in 2017.
